Athletes from Shymkent and Karagandy Region stood out not only in numbers but also in performance during the hammer throw events on July 5, the final day of the Kazakhstan U20 Athletics Championships.
Hammer throwers opened the schedule of the third and last day of the junior championships, held at the Olympic Training Centre stadium in Almaty Region.
A total of 11 athletes took part in the men’s and women’s hammer throw events: 5 from Shymkent, 3 from Karagandy, 2 from East Kazakhstan, and 1 from Almaty.
In the women’s competition, victory went to 17-year-old Tomiris Yermatova from Shymkent. Earlier this year, in May, Tomiris won the Kazakhstan U18 Championships. Just a couple of weeks ago, she claimed gold at the national VI Youth Games, where the age limit is much higher – up to 23 years old.
Now, she added another title to her name by winning the U20 national championship with a throw of 42.45 meters. It’s worth noting that this was not her personal best, yet she secured a confident win, finishing over four and a half meters ahead of the runner-up.
Second place went to 19-year-old Valeria Loginova from East Kazakhstan Region, with a mark of 37.86. She is older than Yermatova by exactly 2 years and 1 day. The bronze medal was claimed by 18-year-old Yevgeniya Shulgina from Karagandy Region. Interestingly, she recorded the exact same distance – 37.26 meters – in both her fourth and sixth attempts, which turned out to be her best.
In the men’s competition, 19-year-old Dmitriy Shvets from Karagandy Region won gold with a decisive throw of 56.23 meters. The silver medal went to 18-year-old Aldiyar Kairollaev from East Kazakhstan, who recorded 50.39 meters in one of his attempts. The bronze went to 19-year-old Azizkhan Arifkhanov from Shymkent, who threw 46.45 meters.
