KAZAKHSTAN U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS. 3000M STEEPLECHASE, JUNIORS – A TOUGH DISTANCE?

The junior men’s 3000m steeplechase on July 4 saw a small turnout on the second day of the national athletics championships for athletes born in 2006 or later.

Held at the Olympic Training Centre stadium in Almaty Region, the U20 Kazakhstan Championships featured the 3000m steeplechase as the event with the fewest participants among junior men. Only three athletes lined up at the start, one of whom – Alexander Akimov from Karagandy Region – had just around 15–20 minutes earlier claimed gold in the 800 meters. A bold double effort.

The battle for gold unfolded between Kamil Salikhov of Ulytau Region and Alibek Dosmukhamed of Shymkent. For a while, the two raced closely, with Salikhov taking the early lead. But the turning point came when Dosmukhamed made his move, breaking away from his rival. The athlete from Shymkent crossed the finish line first with a time of 10 minutes and 28.59 seconds – meeting the second-class standard. The silver medal went to the Ulytau runner, who clocked 10:40.01, a third-class result. Alexander Akimov, having attempted the 3000m steeplechase right after his 800m victory, didn’t meet the third-class standard but bravely endured to the finish in 12:02.91 and earned a bronze medal.
