KAZAKHSTAN U-20 CHAMPIONSHIPS. BOHDAN HONCHAROV – A STRONG STATEMENT

Shymkent hurdler Bohdan Honcharov can rightfully be called one of the standout performers of Day 2 at the Kazakhstan U-20 Athletics Championships, which feature athletes born in 2006 or later.

The championship is taking place at the Olympic Training Centre stadium, located about 20 kilometres from Almaty.

The medalists in the 110-metre hurdles were determined on July 4, the second day of competition. In athletics, results are timed to the hundredth of a second – and remarkably, Honcharov’s winning time of 13.82 seconds exactly matched the Kazakhstan U-20 national record, set by Denis Semenov over 15 years ago, in May 2008.

Equally notable is how much Honcharov improved his performance compared to just two weeks earlier at the national Youth Games held at the same venue. Then, he won in 14.53 seconds. Now – 13.82.

Fellow Shymkent athlete Dmytro Kalashnikov came second with 14.71, also showing progress from his Youth Games time of 15.14.

Seventeen-year-old Dmytro Kulybaba of Almaty claimed bronze in 14.74, just three hundredths of a second behind the silver medalist. Though still eligible for the younger boys’ category, Kulybaba is already proving capable of challenging older athletes for medals. Having a strong role model like Honcharov can only push his development further – it’s in competing with the best that athletes truly grow.
