KAZAKHSTAN U-20 CHAMPIONSHIPS – 100M HURDLES: A VICTORY DECIDED BY…MILLIMETRES?

In a thrilling final on July 4 at the Kazakhstan U‑20 Championships (held at the Olympic Training Centre near Almaty), the women’s 100 m hurdles title came down to an unbelievable margin: thousandths of a second.

Almaty’s Angelina Shrubyanyets narrowly edged out Shymkent’s Angelina Volodkina by a mere 0.003 seconds—they were tied through hundredths. The photo finish declared Shrubyanyets the winner with a time of 14.543, while Volodkina clocked 14.546. Bronze went to Darya Pavlenko from East Kazakhstan with 14.83. All three performances met the Candidate for Master of Sport standard.

Impressively, Shrubyanyets, who just turned 16 in March, remains eligible to compete in junior U‑18 events next year. Volodkina is 17, and Pavlenko will turn 19 in August.

Remarkably, Shrubyanyets recovered quickly from the hurdle final and prepared for the 200 m race just 30 minutes later—where she advanced to the final and finished 5th. A testament to her endurance and competitive spirit.
