For several reasons, Anastasiya Kaloshina’s performance at the Kazakhstan Cup deserves special attention. In women’s hammer throw, she is unquestionably Kazakhstan’s number one right now.
The women’s hammer throw — Kaloshina’s specialty — took place on the morning of June 28, the third and final day of the Kazakhstan Athletics Cup, held at the Olympic Training Centre stadium in Almaty Region.
As with the men’s event, there were only two competitors — both representing East Kazakhstan Region. Yet the impression left by the event was completely different. The reason: Anastasiya Kaloshina.
Reportedly, she has been training in Belarus for the past three years. However, Kaloshina holds Kazakhstani citizenship and regularly competes at domestic events.
It was clear from the start that Kaloshina would win. After an invalid first attempt, she delivered an impressive series: 53.18, 54.02, 53.38, 57.50, and 51.79 metres. Her best mark came in the fifth round — 57.50 metres.
While 57.50 might now be a routine distance for Kaloshina, for other Kazakhstani athletes in this discipline, it remains far out of reach. What’s equally important is that despite having no real competition, Kaloshina didn’t treat the event lightly. She came not to put on a show, but to compete — with herself. That she posted her top mark in the penultimate attempt reflects a deep professionalism and drive to maintain a high standard regardless of external factors.
Kaloshina’s approach sets an example — both for her 19-year-old fellow competitor Valeriya Loginova and for Loginova’s coaches. The gap between first and second place? Nearly 20 (!) metres.
There’s another noteworthy aspect: Kaloshina’s appearance. It was obvious she hadn’t just thrown on the first thing she found — she cared about how she looked, how she presented herself. Her well-considered outfit and even makeup underscored her respect for the sport. After all, for an athlete, competition is much like a performance on stage.
In short, Kaloshina’s attitude — both toward her competitions and herself — is a true mark of class and professionalism.
