At national competitions in the shot put sector, Ivan Ivanov has no real rivals. So at the Kazakhstan Cup, the only question was — what kind of result would he deliver?
June 26 marked the first day of competition at the Kazakhstan Cup in athletics, held at the Olympic Training Centre in Almaty Region. Looking at the lineup in the men’s shot put, it was immediately clear that first place would go to Ivan Ivanov, now representing East Kazakhstan Region. The intrigue lay in the result he would produce.
There was a recent benchmark — on June 22, at the Gennadiy Arzumanov Memorial in Tashkent, Ivanov won with a throw of 18.80 metres. Just four days later, at the Kazakhstan Cup, he claimed victory with 19.14 metres. His other valid attempts were 18.85, 18.75, and 18.73 metres.
The silver medal went to Konstantin Uteshev, also from East Kazakhstan Region, with 14.77 metres. Bronze went to Beksultan Yelikbayev from Turkistan Region, with a throw of 14.45 metres.
Ivanov’s result meets the Master of Sport standard. The other two medallists achieved results at the first-class standard. In total, four athletes competed.
In the Asian shot put top list for 2025, Ivan currently ranks 14th, trailing athletes from China (6), Iran (2), Saudi Arabia, India (2), Taipei, and Bahrain.
