Karina Vasilyeva, representing Almaty, has added another gold medal to her growing collection — this time for her win at the Kazakhstan Cup in athletics.
Women’s discus throw was part of the programme at the inaugural Kazakhstan Athletics Cup, held from June 26 to 28 at the Olympic Training Centre stadium, located about 20 kilometres from Almaty.
The women’s discus event featured three participants. At the Cup, the favourite — 21-year-old Karina Vasilyeva from Almaty — was essentially competing not against the other athletes, but against her own performance from the week before at the Youth Games held at the same venue. Then, she won with a first-class result of 43.22 metres. At the Kazakhstan Cup, however, Vasilyeva surpassed that mark in two attempts, the best of which was measured at 47.45 metres — meeting the Candidate for Master of Sport standard.
Thus, Karina Vasilyeva became the Kazakhstan Cup champion in the women’s discus throw. Second place went to 18-year-old Arina Mozulyako from East Kazakhstan Region with a throw of 36.74 metres. Third place was claimed by 17-year-old Almaty athlete Yekaterina Serebrennikova, who threw 32.48 metres. Both results correspond to the second-class qualification standard.
