KAZAKHSTAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS. HOW VADIM KARNAUKHOV

KAZAKHSTAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS. HOW VADIM KARNAUKHOV "MADE A DEAL" WITH THE WIND

At the Olympic Training Centre stadium in Almaty Region, there are two long jump pits. On July 10, judges wisely chose the one with a tailwind for the run-up — and no one took better advantage of the conditions than Vadim Karnaukhov.

The men’s long jump competition took place on the opening day of the Kazakhstan Athletics Championships. The wind was strong — but favorable.

In his very first attempt, 19-year-old Vadim Karnaukhov from Akmola Region caught a 5.3 m/s tailwind and soared to 7.53 meters — a mark that remained unbeaten. In his second attempt, with a milder 2.7 m/s wind, he jumped 7.30 meters.

Another contender, 22-year-old Romeo Petrov from North Kazakhstan, landed at 7.21 meters in his second attempt, riding a 6.0 m/s tailwind, which temporarily moved him into second place. But in the fourth round, 17-year-old Asan Azamatuly from East Kazakhstan responded with a leap of 7.24 meters — assisted by an even stronger 6.7 m/s wind — overtaking Petrov.

However, Romeo Petrov wasn’t done. In his final, sixth attempt, he jumped 7.31 meters with a 5.0 m/s wind, reclaiming second place.

In the end, it was Vadim Karnaukhov who "negotiated with the wind" best — and became the champion of Kazakhstan!
