KAZAKHSTAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS. 110M HURDLES – A SPEED SURPRISE FROM YEVGENIY PROKUDIN

n the men’s 110m hurdles, Yevgeniy Prokudin not only challenged the national favorite, David Yefremov, but stunned the field by winning gold and setting a new personal best.

he medals in the 110m hurdles were decided on July 11, Day Two of the Kazakhstan Athletics Championships, held at the Olympic Training Centre stadium about 20 kilometers from Almaty.

The clear leader in this discipline has long been 26-year-old David Yefremov from Karagandy Region. In previous years, he qualified for both the World Championships and the Olympic Games. He remains a strong candidate to represent Kazakhstan at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo this September. At the Asian Championships in late May, he placed fifth with a time of 13.69 seconds.

But the national championships revealed a serious contender for that top spot. On July 11, 24-year-old Yevgeniy Prokudin — also from Karagandy Region — claimed victory with a personal best of 13.74 seconds. Yefremov followed with 13.81. It’s worth noting that both times were aided by a tailwind of 3.6 m/s.

Bronze went to Bogdan Goncharov from Shymkent, who clocked 14.40. He shouldn't be overlooked either — just one week earlier, on the same track and in nearly windless conditions, the 18-year-old won the U20 national title with a personal best of 13.82.
