Athletes from six regions and three cities of republican significance will take part in the women’s throwing events and shot put at the upcoming Kazakhstan Athletics Championships.
The event will be held from July 10 to 12 at the Olympic Training Centre stadium, located about 20 kilometers from Almaty.
Participants in the various throwing disciplines and shot put will represent six regions — Mangystau, East Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, Turkistan, and Zhetysu — along with the cities of Astana, Almaty, and Shymkent.
Shot Put
Twelve women are entered, with nine of them representing just two regions — four from Almaty and five from Mangystau Region. Based on previous results, the favorites are 21-year-old Karina Vasilyeva from Almaty and 19-year-old Angelina Poltinova from Shymkent. Both are currently competing at the first-class athlete level.
Hammer Throw
Three athletes are listed. Despite the small field, this event carries real promise for Kazakhstan on the Asian level. This year, 23-year-old Anastasiya Kaloshina from East Kazakhstan Region has surpassed the Master of Sport standard of 58.00m multiple times. In June, she set a new national record with a throw of 63.80m. That result would have earned her fourth place at the Asian Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, in late May.
Rising talent Tomiris Yermatova from Shymkent, who turned 17 this year, is also making waves in the hammer throw. She’s already dominating not just her age group — in June, Tomiris won gold at the national Youth Games, where the upper age limit was 23.
Discus Throw
Five athletes will compete in this event. The favorite here is once again Karina Vasilyeva — the same athlete tipped for gold in the shot put. Two weeks ago, she won the Kazakhstan Cup, recording a best attempt of 47.45m, which meets the Candidate for Master of Sport standard.
Javelin Throw
Seven competitors are registered. Notably, the field includes athletes from five regions and the city of Astana. The favorite is multi-time national champion Margarita Nazarova from East Kazakhstan Region. From the younger generation, 20-year-old Natalia Sokolova, also from East Kazakhstan, is emerging as a serious contender. At the end of June, Nazarova won the Kazakhstan Cup with a throw of 47.07m — meeting the Candidate for Master of Sport standard — while Sokolova placed second with 43.99m. The key question now is how much pressure Natalia can put on the reigning champion at the national championships.
