BEFORE THE START – KAZAKHSTAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. MEN’S JUMPS

At the upcoming Kazakhstan Athletics Championships, male jumpers will represent six regions along with the cities of Almaty and Shymkent. Qazathletics.kz highlights the key medal contenders across all four jumping events.

All four men’s jumping disciplines will be contested at the national championships, taking place from July 10 to 12 at the Olympic Training Centre stadium in Almaty Region. The jumpers will represent seven regions — Karagandy, Turkistan, East Kazakhstan, Almaty, Akmola, North Kazakhstan — as well as the cities of Almaty and Shymkent.

Pole Vault
Seven athletes are entered. While the main coaching base for pole vault is in Almaty, it’s encouraging to see athletes training in this discipline in Karagandy and East Kazakhstan as well.

All of Kazakhstan’s top current vaulters are expected to compete. Two weeks ago at the Kazakhstan Cup, 19-year-old Almaty athlete Maksim Balabin delivered a surprise victory with a 5.10m clearance. Last week, he raised his personal best to 5.15m.

Among the national team members, 33-year-old Danil Polyansky from Karagandy and 25-year-old Ivan Tovchenik from Almaty (turning 26 in July) will likely aim to reassert their status. Also in contention for medals is 21-year-old Vladislav Garbuznyak, also from Almaty.

High Jump
Six athletes are entered. At the beginning of the year, 22-year-old Igor Kosolapov from Karagandy Region was considered a potential leader in this event. His personal best of 2.16m was set in 2022. However, this season he has struggled to approach that level. Both at the Youth Games and Kazakhstan Cup in June, Kosolapov cleared only 2.00m. None of the other jumpers have surpassed 2.10m this season either.

Long Jump
Nine competitors are expected. Absent from the lineup is this season’s top performer, Zelimkhan Nasyrov. In his absence, the season’s best mark among the entrants belongs to 19-year-old Vadim Karnaukhov from Akmola Region, who has jumped 7.35m. Another strong medal hopeful is 22-year-old Romeo Petrov from North Kazakhstan Region.

Triple Jump
Also featuring nine athletes, the triple jump promises a head-to-head showdown between 22-year-old Zelimkhan Nasyrov from Akmola Region and 26-year-old Yevgeny Kiselev from North Kazakhstan. Kiselev has yet to clear the 16-metre mark this season. Nasyrov, meanwhile, placed sixth at the Asian Championships in May, set a personal best of 16.21m, and met the Master of Sport standard for the first time.
